Mark Webber put the controversy regarding team favouritism to one side to record an easy victory in the British Grand Prix. Starting from second on the grid he made a better start than Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel to lead from the first corner onwards. Vettel punctured leading to him trailing the field but he stormed back to finish seventh.
Webber was heard to say "Not bad for a number two driver" over the team radio following his victory. This was referring to the team's decision to take the only remaining new front wing off his car and give it to teammate Vettel ahead of qualifying on Saturday.
Lewis Hamilton also started well and took advantage of Vettel’s problems to gain second place, which he held all the way to the finishing line. His McClaren team-mate Jenson Button made good progress through the pack to turn a starting grid position of 14th into a 4th place finish.
Hamilton has extended his lead at the top of the drivers championship over compatriot Button with Webber third and Vettel fourth. These drivers are the only ones with 100+ points at this stage of the season and look set to battle it out for the title over the remaining nine GPs.
